Cheney Absent From RNC

While the Republicans are meeting in the Twin Cities to nominate John McCain and Sarah Palin as their ticket for the upcoming general election, the current Vice President is nowhere to be found.

Despite pre-hurricane news that he would speak, and even though President Bush addressed the delegates via satellite from the White House, Cheney is on a tour of the former Soviet republic of Azerbaijan. The BBC has the story, since the American media outlets are a little busy wiping the drool from their mouths right now.

US Vice-President Dick Cheney is in Azerbaijan at the start of a tour of the region aimed at supporting US allies in the former Soviet Union.

Mr Cheney will also visit Ukraine and then Georgia, a month after fighting erupted between Russia and Georgia in the breakaway region of South Ossetia.

The trip adds in a sprinkle of ramped up tensions as well.

The trip is likely to infuriate Moscow, which sees those three states as part of its sphere of influence.

What better way to spend the week that your party celebrates a historic ticket than making the Russians mad by your mere presence in some of their neighboring countries. Seriously though, Cheney is like Rodney Dangerfield, no respect at all.

Of course, it’s not like John McCain would want someone with an 18% job approval rating gumming up his party either. Either way, I wouldn’t keep my eyes out for any Cheney-McCain appearances any time soon.
